Diploma Fine Arts: Sem 1 aka Part 1 (Uitm Lendu Melaka)

Assalamualaikum and welcome, this time I intended to write about my experience, what we learn (I think I'll talk about this more) as a fine art student in UiTM Kampus Alor Gajah, Melaka.

As you guys might know, before we start our first sem the part 1 student (yes, uitm called the student 'part' and not 'sem') will face interim month where we complete the registration, got our college and room, class, timetable and so on. There's this infamous thing where in uitm Malaysia-wide called MDS week aka Minggu Destini Siswa xD.

This MDS is usually filled with talks about uitm, the student portal yada yada (but it's important tho so don't skip any useful information).  Whether this MDS will be a hell or a fun program will depend on the uitm itself. Alhamdulillah all the PM (fasilitator) in uitm Alor Gajah all are very nice and always concern about us, "siswa siswi okay? siswa siswi ada yang sakit tak? siswa siswi dah lapar ke?" okay that last one I made it up lol i don't remember. Even they're strict but they're reasonable. And the program only limits from 4 AM until 5 PM , unlike some other uitm that held the program until 1 or 2 AM. They said it's important for us students to get enough rest. Lovyah uitm alor gajah <3

So it's a really fun week and we miss the PM2 quite about a month. I remember about taking random selfie with random stranger and when I show the pic to my friend (after 3 months) she said one of the is an instafamous and me be like, what? And I've neer seen that girl til now lol.

Through the whole month we were assigned a work for UED subject, to make a portfolio or something like that, and the methods depend on your class and PA (it's like guru kelas in school) too. We have to do a video, folio, more video, and design something, I guess. There are individual work and group work.

Subjects:

The subjects we have to take during SEM 1 includes:

1. FND 110 and FND111 (subject code)

a. FND110

FYI each one of AD (Art n Design, I'll use this shortform from now on), must take both FND subject in sem 1, ESPECIALLY  Fine art, because this is fine art subject. FND110 teaches us the basic skills to improve our techniques, psycho motor, observation, proportion, measurement and all of that.

I would like to show some of my assignments down below (which I still have the picture, since all of our assignments were handed in and it never returned to us) . Btw, you'll mostly be using A1 and A2 sized paper.

This is my first assignment and the only assignment that managed to make me cry. This is the first and last I cried because of assignment during sem 1. The objective of this assignment is to train our psychomotor. Aside from horizontal and vertical line, we must do diagonal lines, cubes, circles and cylinder, each one on different paper.

My nightmare. We have to do 3 types of drawing of a spray bottle, and... well..my bottle is..the hardest. I borrowed this bottle from a friend because I don't have my own U_U

Drawing pineapple skin and a whole pineaple using charcoal on A0 sized boxboard

There are still many assignments like contour drawing, measurement etc but these are the only picture I still have. For final assessment, we had to draw 15 (or more) subjects from nature realisticaally, on A0 boxboard, using any kind of media.

What I can say is, all of the work given is not too much, but what taking us a long time to do it is the meticulousness. You can NEVER RUSH an art. Otherwise it may look unsatifying while you actually can do better. So, please don't procrastinate too much.

b. FND111

This subject goes in depth about Elements and Principle of Art and how to apply it in every project that we did. For example week 2 we made a project about 'line', what is line and all of that. Then the next week is texture and so on. And each project you have to make a folio (A2 sized).

Here are some of the work that I did.

                                                       First assignment, topic about line.

our final work for Line topic.

Topic : Shape
Topic: Texture

Again, I don't have any more pictures. Aside from those, basically every elements of art have its own project, line, shape, texture, colour, form (our final assessment, we need to do sculpture).

Btw, I can say the amount of stress I get from this FND111 subject is WAY more than FND110, this is the only subject that could made me stay up at night and still not complete the work in due time. So, for the upcoming art and design students, brace yourself :') ouh, and chinese ink will be your bestfriend! 💖

2. ELC 121

I don't really remember the full name, is it Integrated Language Skills? hah pardon me. This is an english subject, which you'll learn about pretty much anything basic, like how to search for important points in a passage by skimming, scanning etc. How to have a group discussion, listening to details and more. This subject is using a textbook that you have to buy. In the end of semester, there are 3 test you have to take, which are reading test, listening test and speaking test. This subject doesn't have a final exam where you must go to exam hall and all of that. All test will be held in class and it depends on the lecturer when to do the test. So my advice regarding this subject, just focus in class, because as AD students you'll don't have time to study, just do the task that was given and lastly, pay attention to the common mistake students make when doing reading test. That's all.

I forgot to mention, before semester 1 starts, you can take an english test called EPT (if I'm not mistaken), if you passed this test then you don't have to take ELC121 that semester. To be honest, don't afraid to try, I kinda regret for not taking it because we got kinda busy and I really want more free time hahahaha.

3. CTU 101

This is Asas2 Syariah Islam. I think in uitm Lendu only have this option for all students. For non Muslim students, there are other subjects that will replace this one. This subject only have final test, and a couple of group assignments, and hafazan (for us it's Yassin 1-20). You need a textbook too for this subject, but to be honest lecturers have their own slides and notes for teaching in class so maybe you guys can ask them for that too. Just like in school, just focus in class, alright? Occasionally we ask lecturer a couple of questions too even though it will definitely will not be in the exam. What I'm trying to say is, learning about Islam will not be boring and we can gain our knowledge too. Don't just learn for exams, try to gain something that will be with you for your life :)

4. VCS 105

Art Appreciation. In this subject, you'll learn mostly about art movement throughout history from ancient time to modern art and Malaysian art. You'll learn the basic art appreciation from description of artwork, analyze the form and interpretation of art. I could say there are many things to remember but don't worry, for final exams there's usually a target ( but like usual, don't take it 100% , but it sure does helps), plus, this subject also have some assignments you have to do during class, a presentation or video, and some test in class.

This subject has final exam, don't have any textbook.  But there's slide and notes. VCS subjects usually a killer subject for students so make sure even though you are busy with assignments, don't always skip classes, and make sure you study regularly unless you have the ability to cramp all the lessons in one night before exams. The best thing you can do, is read about a topic first before attending class so when the lect is teaching, you can understand more. If you can't tell already, yes I'm a nerd.

5.VCS 128

Actually I don't remember the name, but it's more about culture, definition of socialization, community, theories, long story short it is like history or sejarah lah. My advice is the same as VCS 105, pay attention in class and don't forget to take notes too. This subject also don't have its own textbook, have some tests, assignments,  presentation, and final exam.

6. KOR (kokurikulum)

Yes, you have to join kor from sem 1 until sem 3. For me, in sem 1 I joned Kesatria because only kesatria have the privilege to change to non-uniform kor after sem 1. Meanwhile for other kor like APM, Bomba, PBSM, you have to stay until sem 3. Kesatria also have sem 2 and 3 if you are interested to stay in it. I forgot to mention, there are SUKSIS (kinda like police idk, sorry fellow susksis students) which only a handful of people are selected to join (after application, and fitness test all of that). Actually, all information about SUKSIS and its benefits will be told during MDS so don't worry.

7. UED

This is the first thing you'll face after starting to get into your class during orientation month. And it is must be completed before starting the sem, or just depends on your lecturer.

So, that's all from me, I'm sorry if I accidentally blabbering something insignificant. Thanks for reading this far ^^.
